Focus on Development

U19Player development, technically, mentally and physically, comes from experienced coaching, a stable environment and a progressive soccer program. Development of players, including winning, must be age-appropriate, and handled correctly. It is a balance between a player's family time and time on the field, which cannot be effective without respect for both. We all have a responsibility to help players improve, and as coaches, a responsibility to deliver.

The coaching staff at SC Athletic is multi-cultural; a combination of State licensed coaches and educators, former professionals, current College players and individuals with overseas experience. Player development is driven by coaches with the soccer knowledge and life skills to know what is needed at all levels, and we have that.

High School soccer, with it's differing playing environment, large fan bases, close media coverage, and a responsibility to represent communities and produce results, prepares players for the rigors of College and Professional life, and we have coaching representation at four High Schools.

We believe coaching and facilities are key, and the rest will follow, and with exclusive rights to seven area fields, we have the room to help players grow. For more on our philosophy, go to About SCA.

SC Athletic Academy for Ages U5 - U7/8

SCA Academy

SC Athletic has created an Academy for our very youngest players. The Academy is focused on player development and promoting a love for the game. To create this environment, we promote positive coaching, no-score games, positive parent involvement, and weekly training sessions.

The SC Athletic Academy is coached by Dan Harrison, who is a national "C" license coach, and James Turner, SC Athletic's skills coach and former captain of the UCI Soccer Team.

SC Athletic Joins Strikers FC
Strikers FC

We are proud to announce our affiliation with Strikers FC as we move into the next phase of the development of our club.

As a club, it has always been our purpose to provide a premier environment for playing soccer, the most highly-trained coaches, and the best opportunities for player development and advancement. Supporting this vision has always required us to be open to change - to embrace new opportunities as they arose and to leave behind the status-quo if it no longer fulfilled our purpose.

Those of you who have been with the club from the beginning have seen those changes. We began as a small contingent of San Clemente United, but soon outgrew that base of operations, and became our own unique club, SC Athletic. Continuing along that path of change, two years ago we combined forces with FC Irvine who were primarily girls teams, and who became part of SC Athletic. Last year we made the move to SCDSL, a more competitive league with stronger teams, leaving behind CSL. Now we are moving forward again to become part of the Strikers FC organization which will provide additional opportunities for our teams.

The FC Irvine group has chosen not accept this opportunity, and so we part ways with the status-quo once again. They will merge with Saddleback United and Socal Futbol Club, and continue on as SC Athletic. We wish them well. Roger Castle, Sr.'s club, although the founders of SoCal Athletic, will continue on as part of Strikers FC.

The benefits to our players through joining Strikers FC are multiple:

  • A direct route to the Academy League for the boys
  • A direct route to ECNL for the girls
  • A Nationally acclaimed program for both younger and older players
  • Greater visibility with college coaches for our players

The BOD has voted to support this significant step forward, and we are currently interviewing for a new Girls Director of Coaching who shares the same vision.

As a club we strive to stay dynamic, fresh, and challenge all of our staff, coaches and players. We can never be content to sit on our laurels. It is our responsibility to provide kids with the best opportunities possible; it is the players responsibility to make the most of those opportunities; and it is the parents responsibility to guide them. We believe this change and realignment provides the very best we can at this time.

Farewell to SC Athletic, but go Strikers !!

Open Training Sessions - January 2013

SC Athletic is holding Open Training Sessions for all prospective players throughout the month of January.

If you are interested in joining one of our teams, you are invited to join in our Open Training Sessions. Our goal is to get to know you in an environment that is informal and relaxed, and more indicative of what kind of player you really are, rather than what we would see during a more stressful one-hour tryout. Open Training Sessons allows prospective players to get to know the SC Athletic environment better than a single tryout would, and see what playing for our Club would be like.

We believe that in this manner we can discover players who will thrive and grow in our program, parents who feel comfortable with a commitment to our Club, and allow our Coaches to develop balanced and effective teams.

To sign up for one of our Open Training Sessions, please contact the appropriate Director of Coaching listed below:

Youngers - Dan Harrison for U7 - U12

Olders - Roger Castle, Sr. for U13 - U19

Summer Tournament Success - Great Start to the Season!

May 28-29, 2012 - We entered four teams in tournament play, and saw all four teams in the finals.

The U11 team was at the Newport Mesa Tournament, and the U12, U13, U14 teams played in the Memorial Tournament at UCI. Given the level of teams we played and the time of the season, our boys performed extremely well. And the tournaments gave our coaches an opportunity to see what their teams can do in a game format.

June 10, 2012 - Copa Laguna Tournament - Our BU14 Team added another championship to their resume.

July 15, 2012 - PSA Canyon Tournament - BU13 Team is the Champion!

July 28-30, 2012 - Copa del Mar Tournament - All three SC Athletic teams entered in the Copa del Mar Tournament came home with the championship! The BU9 Red team took home the trophy in their very first tournament with a winning score of 2-1 versus Arsenal. The BU11 Black team played CV Manchester and finished with a score of 5-0. The BU16 Black team took on Maui United, ranked #4 in Hawaii, and won with a score of 2-1.

August 12-13, 2012 - Nike Athletic Super Cup - SC Athletic brought home 4 trophies on the boys side, and one for the girls. For the boys, our BU9 Black, BU10, BU16 Black and BU18 teams each took the championship. GU10 Holley brought it home for the girls.

August 18-19, 2012 - Toyota of Orange Tournament - The boys U10 team brought home another first place and another tropy! Well done, boys!

SC Athletic Debuts at the Home Depot Center

April 21, 2012 – Coaches Roger Castle Jr. and Alexis Ubillus spent ten days completing their National B license at the Home Depot Center and we were fortunate to have thirty of our U15 and above players invited to the Saturday session.

It was a great opportunity to train and play in a great facility but more importantly be exposed to some of the top youth coaches in the country . There were multiple colleges represented as well as members of the USSF National staff. The players were put through their paces in a four hour session.

The feedback from the National staff was that the players were very well disciplined, listened and executed well under pressure, which needs to be the hallmark of our club. It was a great honor and experience for all who participated, and a great accomplishment for SC Athletic.

Salford Comes to Town

Salford vs. SC Athletic

April 7, 2012 – Every year we get our visit from Salford Schoolboys Association from Manchester, England. This season was a bit different from previous years, as we home stayed the team.

Salford School Boys puts more boys into the football League in England than any other in the country, with Ryan Giggs an Alumni, and David Beckham being best man to an old Salford “lad”. The team that visited this season was very talented, with trialists at Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City in their squad.

Our older boys U15-17 team played in the Stadium at MVHS and took them the distance in a very close game. Salford returned with a vengeance for the second game when playing our U15 team, and we all learned why they are at the top in their country.

The whole weekend was a fantastic success. Many trans-Atlantic friendships were struck after the games and during the home stays.
